Chandelier Size Guide
General Sizing Tips and Considerations:
- To size a chandelier as the focal point of any space, such as a dining room, foyer, living room, etc, measure the length and width of your room (in feet) then add those figures together. The sum of those two numbers is the approximate recommended diameter of your chandelier in inches.
- Example:
- Your room measures 12ft x 12ft
- 12 + 12 = 24
- Correct Size Chandelier = 24 inches in diameter
- The average height of a chandelier should measure 7ft above the floor. With higher ceilings, 8ft - 10ft will work, but make sure you increase the light output the higher you go.
-
You want to allow about 4ft of clearance around your fixture, especially if it hangs near a door. Some fixtures may hang closer, if the shape allows, but in general, 4ft is enough breathing room and gives the light source output room to disperse.
Dining Room Tables:
- Chandeliers above dining room tables should have a diameter of 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table.
- Chandeliers over a kitchen island should hang 30-36 inches above the island surface.
- If you have a Linear Chandelier being installed over a kitchen island, you want about 6 inches of breathing room on either side of your linear fixture. You can also follow a 2/3 rule, choosing a linear chandelier that’s about 2/3 the size of your kitchen island.
